Lorene Salt
Welcome to Lorene Salt's lovely exhibiton. I first 'met' Lorene when she sent a feedback comment to stitchamaze.com. We wrote back and forth a few times and discovered that we live quite near to each other and even have the same favourite needlepoint shop! Our first meeting in person was coffee and show-and-share in a mall, where I had the great pleasure of seeing Lorene's work and marvelling at her talent!

Lorene writes:
"I have been cross-stitching since I was a teenager. I am a graduate of Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto, Ontario in the Fashion Merchandising and Design Program; hence I am a sewer as well, and have enjoyed creating all kinds of craftwork, needlework and jewellery over the years.
I became hooked on Canvas work about 8 years ago, and have completed both the EAC (Embroiderer's Association of Canada) Basic Canvaswork and Intermediate Courses, and now plan to enrol in their Advanced Course. I love to watch a design come alive through working with colour and texture. I live in Aurora, Ontario with my husband of 24 years, teenaged son and daughter and an two year old Springer Spaniel puppy. Life is good!"

"This piece started it all. It was my very first canvaswork piece. Once I finished it, I was hooked! It is 11" x 11" and stitched on 14 ct. mono canvas using a variety of overdyed floss, silk threads, perle cottons, synthetic specialty threads and metallics"
"Contemporary Bargello"

"I really love doing Bargello. This was my first Bargello piece. It took a while to stitch. It is 8" x 11" and stitched on 22 ct. mono canvas using floss and Caron Waterlilies. It was an extremely fun piece to stitch."
"Diamond in the Rough"

"This was my very first original design. It is the final assignment from one of my Canvaswork courses. I was asked to design something using various stitches that I had learned in my previous 6 lessons. It is 10" x 10" and stitched on 14 ct. mono canvas.
I used the jewel tones of Turquoise, Royal Blue, Fuchsia and Purple and their various tones and values. It contains over 30 different stitches. It is stitched using overdyed floss, Caron Watercolours, Caron Waterlilies, Silk , #3 and #5 perle cotton, Velour and Kreinik Metallics.
The actual design is a variation of a Corn and Beans pattern quilt block. I think I drove my family crazy showing them different colour combinations and thread textures throughout the whole design process! I am very pleased with the outcome."
"Winter Blues"

"Winter Blues was stitched on 18ct. mono canvas using mainly Pearl Cottons but also overdyed floss and some metallic thread. The design is approximately 12" x 12" square.
The inspiration for this piece came from a wooden floor tile that I had seen. I stitched during January and called it "Winter Blues" because working on it chased the 'blues' away! . . . [corny I know . . . but that was my reasoning!]
September 2007 - My exciting news!
In August 2007 at the ANG National Seminar in Baltimore, Maryland, I was so excited to win 1st prize in the Original Design non-professional category for my piece Winter Blues."
"Soledad"

"Soledad was stitched on 18ct. mono canvas using Pearl Cottons, Silks, Overdyes and Metallics. The design is 11" x 11" square.
The inspiration for Soledad came from a metal sculpture that I had seen. I tried to create texture in this piece as if you could really feel the flames from the sun. It was incredibly fun to stitch and is my final project for the Intermediate Canvaswork course I am taking through EAC.
September 2007 - My exciting news!
In May 2007 at the EAC National Seminar in St. John's, Newfoundland I won the Original Design Award non-professional for my piece Soledad.
Then in August 2007 at the ANG National Seminar in Baltimore, Maryland, I won 3rd prize in the Original Adaptation non-professional category for Soleded.
Needless to say I am thrilled to bits!

"Analogous Fusion was stitched on 18ct. mono canvas using Silks, Metallics, Overdyes and Pearl Cottons. The design measures 10" x 10". This piece was a course that I took at the 2006 EAC Seminar in Edmonton, Alberta."
