Crayola Crayons

The story of "Crayola Crayons"

This was another "must have" canvas. Stitching with all of those colors would be like coloring with a giant box of crayola crayons. I knew that this piece would belong to my artist grandson Lucas. Although he was only a four year old artist Lucas was already looking at books with abstract design and brilliant color.

I did make a few changes to the painted canvas. Some of the colors were changed to make them more childlike but not babyish because I wanted the piece to grow with Lucas.

The border of diamond shapes had originally been a border of triangles. Diamonds seemed to me to add sparkle to the piece so I doubled the image. That also allowed more show of color and the diamonds even remind me of watercolor paint palettes.

The piece is stitched in basketweave except for a one row inner border of cross stitch separating the square center from the diamond border. Buttons were sewn at the top, spelling L U C A S.

Crayola Crayons hangs on the wall opposite Lucas' bed, well positioned for contemplating the interplay of color and form.
